Hagelstein Castle Information

Below is a scan of a photo the drawing (painting?) of the Hagestein Castle ( or "Tribe (family root)  house, "Stammhaus"). This drawing was found in a book or a museum by Hans Korting of Kapellen. The webmaster has a copy of the photo.

The text in the upper right says "III Deet, b2.372"

The text in the lower left says:  "S. Fokle Det et senlps"

The text in the center below says "Belegering van het Slot HAGESTEIN, Voor Graare Willem DEN VI.

Hans Korting wrote on the back of  the photo (written about 1996).

"Das Haus Hagelstein war Wahvscheinlick das Stammhaus der Familie Hagelstein.  Theodor's (geb. 1850) und Mathias Korting's (geb. 1853) Mütter in Capellen-Geldern Germany waren die Söhne von Johann Korting und Agnes (geboren) Hagelstein. "

In English (webmaster's translation). "The Hagelstein Castle house was the "root, or tribe, or original" home of the Hagelstein family. Theodore's (born 1850) and Mathew's (born 1853) mother in Kapellen-Geldern Germany were the sons of Johann Korting and Agnes (born) Hagelstein)."

Webmaster Notes:

1) Before about 1937, the name of the village Kapellen was spelled Capellen. However, the government decided the "C" names were not suitable Germany names, and the "C"s were changed to "K". Also, nearby "Crefeld" was changed to "Krefeld". Some people guessed that "C" names were too "French".

2) There are questions about the family name spelling, because the drawing has the name as Hagestein, and the family name was Hagelstein. (note the "L". ).

3) In 1995 the webmaster has visited the village of Hage(l)stein in Netherlands and seen the site of the Castle. The place is now a perfectly flat hay field, with not one bump, ridge or stream.
